Leonard Stern, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is Medical Director of Home Therapies at Columbia University Dialysis Center in New York City and Director of Peritoneal Dialysis at the Columbia University Medical Center campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Stern earned his medical degree with honors (AOA in junior year and valedictorian of his class) from New York Medical College in Valhalla in 1975. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in New York City. Dr. Stern served two fellowships in nephrology, one at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, and a subsequent research fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital at Yale University School of Medicine in Connecticut.
Dr. Stern has been principal or co-investigator for more than two dozen research studies focused on topics including hypertension, acute and chronic renal failure, anemia, iron deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism and survival in patients on peritoneal dialysis. He has worked in the field of peritoneal dialysis for more than 30 years and opened the first chronic peritoneal dialysis program at Columbia University Medical Center. He is actively involved in the training programs for medical students, residents and fellows at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Stern has lectured extensively on peritoneal dialysis as well as other topics including cardiovascular risks, anemia, vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease. He has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, of the American Society of Nephrology and of the National Kidney foundation. He has been voted to the Castle Connolly list of Best Doctors in the United States and in the New York Metro area and is listed in New York Magazine Best Doctors in Nephrology. Dr. Stern serves on the medical advisory board for the National Kidney Foundation of New York and on the ESRD Network 2 medical review board.
