Session Overview
Legionella, lead, and PFAS can each threaten occupant health, but they enter, persist, and behave differently within facility water systems. Legionella can proliferate in building plumbing and create exposure through contaminated water droplets. Lead can be released from service lines, pipes, and fixtures, while PFAS typically enter facilities through source water and persist without being removed by flushing, heat, or disinfection.
This session explained how federal requirements apply differently based on a facility’s water-system classification and controlling authority. We examined Safe Drinking Water Act requirements governing lead-free plumbing and covered public water systems, EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements and PFAS drinking-water standards, and facility-specific requirements under CMS policy, VHA Directive 1061(4), GSA PBS Order 1000.7B, Head Start standards, and Department of Defense PFAS policy.
The discussion also addressed practical facility-level execution. We defined how to determine whether a facility operates a public water system; distinguish water-provider obligations from facility responsibilities; identify contaminant sources and exposure pathways; and establish appropriate monitoring, corrective-action, communication, and verification procedures. We also examined how system controls, source removal, treatment, and appropriately selected point-of-use filtration can work together within a layered water-management strategy.
Do You Have a Question About Navigating Federal Requirements for Legionella, Lead, and PFAS?
If you have questions about how construction, renovation, plumbing work, water-fed equipment changes, or return-to-use decisions should connect to your Water Management Program, the Nephros team can help.
We are available to help teams evaluate facility-specific water risks, understand contaminant sources and exposure pathways, identify appropriate monitoring and control strategies, assess where point-of-use filtration may provide added protection. We are also able to provide additional, tailored education for you and your team as needed.
