Water plays a uniquely critical role in dialysis. Unlike the general population who interact with water through drinking or cooking, dialysis patients are exposed to vast volumes of water that come into direct contact with the bloodstream through the mixing of acid and bicarbonate during treatment. This makes purification and ongoing filtration essential to patient safety.
Our fireside chat explores the entire water pathway in dialysis from the water room to the dialysis machine, including the technologies, testing protocols, and filtration safeguards that protect patients and support daily operations.
We begin in the water room, where water passes through multiple stages of treatment: softening, carbon filtration to remove chlorine and chloramines, reverse osmosis, and final polishing with endotoxin filters. Each stage adds protection against contaminants that, if left unchecked, can have serious consequences ranging from ruptured red blood cells to septic shock or pyrogenic reactions.
Routine monitoring and testing are also critical. Chlorine breakthrough checks every four hours, monthly lab testing, and redundancy features such as secondary filtration help ensure that both dialysis machines and water they rely on consistently meet strict safety standards.
