Weather-related disasters are accelerating, with NOAA recording 27 U.S. billion-dollar events in 2024 alone. Floods, hurricanes, wildfires, heatwaves, and more can have significant impact on water quality and safety. Once compromised water reaches the building, the clinical fallout is immediate. Pathogen exposure ranges from acute gastrointestinal disease and wound infections to Legionnaires’ disease and endotoxin-triggered sepsis. Operationally, critical care across multiple units, as well as sterile processing, can be limited, delayed, or shut down entirely—even HVAC humidifiers and fire-suppression systems can be forced offline.

From municipal-level impact to facility-specific concerns, this webinar detailed the water-specific impact of natural disasters, human safety, and healthcare disruptions. Additionally, we reviewed the guidance and requirements from governing bodies and standards such as CMS, Joint Commission, ASHRAE 514, AAMI ST108, and NFPA 99 regarding facility actions and planning to address water-affected emergencies.

The webinar also assessed the benefits and challenges of a wide range of conventional options, including mobile treatment, chemical shock, water tankers, and packaged or stored water. Further examination was provided regarding point-of-use filtration as a reactive, proactive, and/or complementary response to compromised water events.

We’ve compiled the most salient reference slides from the webinar presentation into a downloadable PDF. These include the comprehensive details regarding natural disaster impact, healthcare facility requirements, and analysis of available solutions..
